Leinster League Premier Division Under 13 Quarter Final.

Wexford Wanderers ....59 Naas ....7

Wexford Wanderers proved too strong for Naas in this eagerly awaited Quarter Final clash. From the kick off Wexford started strongly and recycled possession before sending the ball to their slick back line where Ian Bennett at outside centre broke through the Naas defense to score a try converted by Rory o Connor who kicked at impressive 7 out of 9 kicks at the posts. However it was early stages and Naas were well in contention. In fact Wexford were knocked back by tough rucking from Naas who worked their way into their opponents 22. Following heavy pressure Naas broke through to score a great try through their 1^st centre. Such was their confidence that the conversion was scored by a drop goal. It had the appearance of a tight game at this point. Wexford again worked the ball to their midfield with a hook against the head in the scrum and Ian Bennett was again through to score. 12 points to 7 in favor of Wexford. Wexford went up a gear at this stage at camped in their opponents half. They were dominating the line out with great work especially from Ben Moore. Naas tried to clear from deep inside their 22 but quick thinking from Rory o Connor who took a quick line out finding captain Peter Barry on hand to counter attack. With support from Conor Coleman the move was finished superbly by Finn o Driscoll. The score now was up to 19 points to 7. Two more tries one from scrum half Alex Ryan were to follow leaving Wexford comfortable by half time.

Eight Minutes into the 2^nd half Peter Barry scored a further try to add to Naas’s misery. As a contest it was effectively over by now. Further tries followed from Barry o Connor and Ian Bennett. This was a hugely impressive victory for Wexford. The final score was 9 tries to the home team, who played a quality of rugby beyond their years. The most impressive aspect was their team play and ability to off load.

They now advance to the Leinster semi final of the premier division where Carlow will be their opponents. If this level of performance can be re produced it’s a game not to be missed.

There was an air of anticipation as our 'arch enemy ' of last year were in town. Wounds were still raw and a large crowd was in attendance.

Kilkenny were first out of the traps and pushed Wexford deep into their own 22.next play and they were 0 - 7 up. More pressure ensued and another hammering looked on, but as they say, ''when the going gets tough the tough get going'; Greg McGrath lead by example and slowly but surely they repelled the Kilkenny hoards .The scrum started going forward, and the line - out started winning good ball. Wexford crossed half way with a great move started by Ciaran Kirwan , a quick pass to Connor Halligan who moved it on to Matt Doyle , down the line to Stephen Lyne -- a step inside, a pop pass to Kevin Mahoney and he was away. Try, score 7 7 at half time.

Wexford started to believe in themselves; the 2nd half started at a blistering pace, both teams surging forward ,both defences well on top the tackle counts were high.Then Kilkenny moved it wide to score in the corner and convert 7 - 14.

Wexford heads did not go down; Wanderers rucked hard and created their own luck. Ben O 'Shea passed out wide to Kevin Mahoney who some how beat 4 men to score under the posts -- score 14 14

Kilkenny threw everything at Wexford but out defence held resolute; it was amazing that they didnt concede a penalty,great disipline ;well done lads. final score 14 - 14

This match was played in glorious conditions last Sat, Wexford having drawn against the U15's and trashing Portlaoise, in their previous outings, were looking forward to this one.

The forwards lead the way in this one. The scrum was solid with the addition of Greg McGrath and the back row were rampant and No.8 Ciaran Kirwan went under the posts after 3 mins. Soon after Greg McGrath scored a pushover try.More good forward play and Ciaran Kirwan was in again.

Wicklow finally managed to move the ball wide and their full back scored in the corner .Open side flanker Conor Halligan then added his name to the score board . Wexford drove forward again and tight head Greg McGrath got the ball on half way and 'handed off 'thrice to score the try of the day.Outhalf Matt Doyle was in brilliant form, (especially his right foot). The score at half time was 33 - 5

Conor Halligan started off as we have finished the 1st half with a great run culminating in his second try of the day..Wicklow responded immediately-- that full back again. Scrum-half Ben O'Shea spotted a gap and made it 38 -10. Wicklow made some changes and pushed Wanderers back ;twice they were held up . They eventually scored a converted try.

Wexford now rung the changes , and 2nd centre Luke Lacey scored after a fine passing move .Wicklow weren't finished and scored the final try of the day to leave the final score 52 - 24

Well done lads still more to do.

The Under 13’s continued their unbeaten run this season with a hard fought but thoroughly deserved encounter with neighbours Wicklow on Sunday 7^thNovember.

Have met earlier in the season Wexford were firm favorites for this game however it was much improved Wicklow team to the one which threw in the towel resulting in a 62 to Nil win for Wexford in Septembers match.

Wicklow started the stonger and enjoyed some early territorial advantage. By the 12^thMinute wexford had not managed to get into their opponents half. Despite wicklows ball retention they never looked like breaching a firm wexford defense which was finally getting a resounding test. Against the run of play wexford turned over possession and stuck from inside their own half with a strong break by Ian Bennett who scored the opening try under the posts. Barry o Connor converted to leave the home team 7–0 ahead. Before the break wexford struck again with Ian Bennett again finishing powerfully under the posts to leave wexford 14– 0 ahead at the break.

Wexford perhaps flattered by the half time score line but full credit to their resolute defense which never looked like creaking during the opening half.

In the second half it was wexford who gained the upper hand in terms of territory – but like the 1^st half it was a break away long range strike from the visitors who touched down to leave the game poised at 14 points to 7. Wexford certainly knew they were in a game now and upper the tempo in what was a tough physical encounter. Wexford were denied a try by the corner flag. The forwards were finally getting on top in the latter stages but perhaps some suspect decision making when possible overlaps were created prevented a decisive score. The game finished in the Wicklow half. Food for though for this wexford team. Wexford showed the greater character and resolve to claim the win which now secures a quarter final spot in the Leinster League.

Wexford hosted Gorey at Park Lane .A very close defensive game ensued .Both defences were on top and the tackle count was high on both sides.Half time score 0 0.

Wexford's scrummaging improved somewhat in the second half resulting in better ball for their backs. Wanderers were camped inside Gorey's 22 for long periods but couldn't break through their defence. With 15 mins to go Gorey charged down the field, forced a penalty, kicked for touch, won the line out and pushed over to lead 0 5.

Wexford responded and pushed down field but decision making was suspect. The score just wouldn't come. Final score 0 5 .

Cill Dara 19 Wexford Wanderers 17

All routes do indeed lead to Cill Dara rugby club ,some a lot longer than others.The game was played at a frenetic pace. Neil Beaver made a good break on the right but was hauled down .Cill Dara found their rhythm and threw the ball around with confidence and Martin Curtis scored twice for Cill Dara to lead 12- 0 at half time

A number of changes were made but ball was slow coming. Martin Curtis rounded the Wexord defence on the left for a third time 19 - 0. Bill Quaid came on and the scrum stabilized providing good ball .Kevin Mahoney was popping up everywhere making the hard yards and he finally broke threw to make it 19 - 5

From the kick off Kevin Mahoney broke loose again to win a penalty ,quick tap to Daire MacCormack which was laid off to Stephen Lyne to score 19 - 10.This game was sizzler now with 5 mins to go.

Another penalty for Wexford and Ciaran Kirwan who had a great game at No.8, passed to Daire MacCormack who breeched their midfield to score under thew posts 19 - 17

3 mins remained ,Cill Dara were in disarray, again' Man of the match' , Kevin Mahoney was causing havoc but a 4th try would not come.Fi nal score 19 - 17.This game certainly provides a platform on which to build for the rest of the season.

Kilkenny 14 Wexford Wanderers 33

Wexford Under 13’s traveled to Kilkenny for their opening fixture in the Leinster league last Saturday 9^thOctober. A difficult game to call in advance as these teams had managed to avoid each other last season. Wexford were hit by a number of injuries before the game and had to play without captain Peter Barry, scrum half Alex Ryan, last years winger Bill Joyce who wont be back until the new year as well as Cian Kelly, Richard Ryan, Marcus Harrington and Peter O'Shea.

Despite these set backs it was Wexford who hit the ground running and enjoyed more possession and territory in the opening exchanges of their toughest encounter this season. Wexford dominated the line outs with a sensational display from second row Ben Moore. With 12 minutes on the clock Wexford were awarded a penalty 8 meters from the Kilkenny try line. Quick thinking from scrum half Rory o Connor saw him take a quick tap and make it to the corner catching the Kilkenny defense. Despite missing the conversion it was a fair reflection on the opening 15 minutes. However with ball in hand Kilkenny had the abilty to come back and within 10 minutes their impressive 1^st centre broke through to score under the posts. Try converted to leave Kilkenny ahead by 7 points to 5.

With leadership required the forwards upped their intensity and recycled possession with intense rucking. Ian Bennett soon broke through to score the Wexford’s 2^nd try.His immense power and speed stunning the home team. Try converted 12 to 7 in favor of wexford. From the Kick off Josh Christe made a superb break and at the right time off loaded to Bennett who scored again to make it 19 -7 to wexford at half time.

Kilkenny closed the gap to 5 points with a 2^nd try from their 1^st centre and indeed had a try disallowed which may have turned the game but for a forward pass. When asked the questions it was again wexford who responded. A superb try from fly half Barry o Connor who broke on the blind side and chipped the defense, gathered the bouncing ball and scored under the posts.Ian Bennett scored his hat trick to finish the match 33 14 to the visitors. Well done Wexford !Man of the match was a close call between Ian Bennett and Ben Moore, but Ben Moore for his line outs and ball winning ruck time was the foundation for this victory. All players involved really played superb.

Wanderers kept up their winning start to the season as two further victories were achieved today.

U.15 Friendly

Wexford's U15's had a friendly at home against Tullow at Park Lane. The Wanderers got off to a great start with Brionn Coffey scoring a brace and David Kavanagh making it 15 0 after 10 mins. A rout looked on; how silly of us to write Tullow off. They got their pack moving and aided by inconsistant tackling by Wexford , the visitors scored 3 tries and a penalty to make it 15 - 20 at the break

The Wexford pack responded and driven on by scrum-half Jack Stafford it resulting in better ball for the centres Brionn Coffey and Josh Healy. Going into the final quarter the game was delicately poised at 27 - 27. Wexford just wanted it more and went on to score 2 further tries to win 39 27.As a training exercise this was a good work out, but a lot of hard work lies ahead.

Wicklow 10 Wexford Wanderers 38.

Wexford travelled with a depleated side for the first game of the season, quite a few lads are involved in GAA finals and are preparing for same. Fifteen players travelled and boy did fifteen play; someone suggested conceeding because our margin for error was so tight-- the firing squad are on standby if there is any similar behaviour.

Wexford shot out of the blocks, they kicked off; the ball was caught and moved right to centre Brionn Coffee who broke 3 tackles to score under the posts ,full back Luke Lacey converted. More pressure and Brionn scored again. 5 mins later great pressure resulted in prop Greg McGrath scoring a great forwards try. Luke made it 0 - 19 after 10 mins.

Wcklow got their running game going and battled hard and scored a deserved try just before half time, leaving the score 5 19 at the break.

Wexford had to conserve energy as no subs were available, so ruck and maul was the order of the day. Daire MacCormack made a great intercept in midfield and quick ball to Brionn Coffee made it 5 - 24. Almost immediately Brionn scored again and Luke converted.

Wicklow responded and scored in the corner. The final try was scored by Kevin Bierney after a fine passing move involving David Kavanagh,Josh Healy and Brionn Coffee Final score Wicklow 10 Wexford Wanderers 38

Wicklow 0 Wexford Wanderers 62

Wexford Under 13’s made the transition from Mini rugby to youth rugby in style last Saturday scoring 10 tries and six conversions to no score.

Wexford won the toss and elected to receive possession. Wicklow started with great purpose and troubled Wexford in the opening exchanges especially at the breakdown. It looked after the 1^st five minutes that it could develop into a tight encounter. However despite the possession Wicklow enjoyed in the opening exchanges Wexford proved defensively strong and held the gain line. A trade mark tackle from fly half Captain Peter Barry stopped the Wicklow number 8 and indeed he didn’t attack the 10 channel for the rest of the day.

On 6 Minutes Wexford turned over possession and moved the ball to centre Ian Bennett who powered through to score an impressive opener under the sticks which was duly converted by Peter Barry.

From here on wexford grew in confidence and soon after Ben Moore scored an impressive try. By Half time the score was 24 nil with further tries from David Doyle and Ian Bennett.

The second half was more impressive with the wexford scrum starting to function better after a shaky start in this area. David Doyle finished with 3 tries from Number 8.

Other try scorers were Daniel o Regan, Josh Christe, Peter Barry and Alex Ryan.

A fine result for wexford but tougher challenges lay ahead.

U.15's LOSE IN WADDOCK CUP FINAL

The U.15's tried to bannish the memories of last weeks defeat to Navan, when they took on Kilkenny in Park Lane on Sat morning, in the Waddock Cup Final. Once again they started in terrible fashion, conceding a try after only two minutes of play. Kilkenny had added another before Wexford realised what was going on. Playing into a strong wind they eventually started to play to their strenghts and kept the ball in tight, with the pick and go in opperation they began to press the Kilkenny defence backwards, and were rewarded when Collie Joyce-Ahearne crashed over for a try. Eoin Roche added the points and the game was well and truly now a contest. It remained that way for the rest of the half, 10-7 Kilkenny.

Expectations were high in the Wexford camp, as with the wind at their backs, it was felt that the game would be played in the Kilkenny half of the field. This however was not the case and Kilkenny managed to get their back division more into the game, and another try was added to their tally. Colie Joyce-Ahearne added a second for Wexford bringing the score to 15-12. It remained this way for a period but Kilkenny were doing all the attacking. They scored again to stretch the lead, 20-12.

With time running out Wexford continued to rally and were once again able to cross the Kilkenny line, with Gavin Byrne getting the touchdown. Unfortunately it was too late and the final whistle sounded soon afterwards. 20-17 to Kilkenny.

Wexford 4 v Greystones 0
Greystones turned out a physically strong team, however they were no match for Wexford. From the start Wexford attacked the opposition agressively. They didn't let Greystones settle into the game and most of the first half saw Greystones under pressure in their own half. Wexford won the lineouts and with quick offloading and wonderful wing play managed to put in two tries before half time. This was a very hard physical game played by two teams who wanted to win this end of season game. The second half was fiercely contested by both teams with some great rugby being played by both teams. Wexford's back line held firm and the opposition were unable to breach it despite piling on the pressure. Wexford created the breaks that saw two more tries being scored to secure victory. Wexford dominated in what was a very entertaining game of rugby. They played very well together as a team just as they have done all season. Ian Bennett and Barry O'Connor scoring two tries each. Wexford were the stronger team overall. They showed the kind of spirit and determination that has made them so successful this season. Tributes must go to their coaches who have worked so hard to mould them into the kind of team that has done their club, parents and themselves proud. Thanks to Noel Kelly, Richard Restrick and George O'Connor who gave such committment to these youngsters all season and who can now enjoy a well earned break.

Last Saturday Wexford U12s travelled to Athy RC to play in the Daly Cup. Wexford were allowed to field two teams because of another team not turning up on the day. Last year Wexford won the Cup, but with all Mini tournements now regarded as 'uncompetitive', there was no Cup up for grabs this year.

Wexford A 1 v Athy 3
Wexford's strength was somewhat compromised because of the fielding of two teams. However,despite playing against a very strong Athy side Wexford only conceded three tries. Athy's forwards too fast and strong for Wexford's back line. Wexford played some good attacking rugby and Peter Barry scored a wonderful try after breaking down the opposition's attack and scoring from the break.

Wexford B 5 v Athy 3

Despite being down three at half time Wexford came back to win by two tries in what was a tough game of rugby. In what was a very physical game, and in typical Leinster style Wexford gave the opposition no chance in the second half. Athy failed to contain the fierce Wexford attacks and suffered as a result. Ian Bennett getting three tries and Alex Ryan and Barry O'Connor one each.

Wexford B 1 v Tullamore 6

Tullamore fielded a side which looked more like U13s than U12. They had a physically stronger team and this was reflected in the scoreline. Wexford fought bravely in the face of overwhelming odds and Ian Bennett scored Wexford's only try. Alex Ryan had to have medical attention after suffering an injury in a scrum and took no further part in the tournament. Had Wexford fielded a full squad the outcome would have been very different.

Wexford 6 v Balbriggan 2

The two Wexford teams were now united and as a result were able to field a much stronger squad. Balbriggan managed two scores but couldn't stop the Wexford attacks. Being stronger at the break and in the back line Wexford overwhelmed the opposition with good offloading and attacking wing play.

Wexford 4 v St Brigids 0

St Brigids fielded a very good squad of players and have a reputation of being a hard team to beat. Wexford continued to prove yet again that they can beat the best of teams. Wexford were stronger in all departments and played some great rugby. Good use of the wings led to some great scores by Wexford. Another solid performance from these youngsters. Ian Bennett scoring two tries and Barry O'Connor and David Doyle one each to give Wexford victory.

Wexford 3 v Athy 0

In this last game Wexford showed the kind of talent they have when fielding a full strength squad. They beat Athy by playing intelligent entertaining rugby. Athy just couldn't break down the Wexford attack and they were no match for their back line either. Fast agressive attacking play down both wings by Wexford led to this very impressive win. Athy were simply unable to breach Wexford's solid back line. David Doyle, Ian Bennett and Rory O'Connor scoring a try each to seal victory. Peter Barry was very impressive in the tackles. Last outing of the season comes next Sunday in the Casey Cup when Wexford play host to Greystones.

CASEY CUP WINNERS 2010

This Saturday saw the play-offs for the Casey Cup here in Park Lane. The U11s and U12s combined to form five teams : All Blacks, Leinster,Munster,Connaught and Ulster who had to play each other in a league style play-off. Weather was a bit unkind today and with a few games still to go the heavy rain stopped play. The team with the highest number of tries scored were the winners of this year's Casey Cup and surprise surprise it turned out to be the All Blacks. All teams played well despite the wet and slippery conditions. After nearly three hours of rugby and with very tired and wet players and coaches retiring to the clubhouse, the catering staff provided a very welcome warm meal and refreshments. Well done Debbie and Co.

Wexford Wanderers Under 13's faced Kilkenny in the South-East League Final last Wednesday in New Ross .A tight encounter was expected. Kilkenny shocked the Wexford boys by putting them under tremendous pressure immediately .Kilkenny had their homework done and kept moving the ball out wide..... the chinks appeared and they roared into a 28--0 lead by half-time.

The writing was on the wall, Andrew Maguire moved to scrum-halk, Jack Stafford to out half Peter Barry and Ian Bennett came on as centres. Now it was Wexfords's turn to put Kilkenny under pressure, Wexford were not going to roll over.The forwards continued to provide ball and the backs started running at them.Now we were crossing the 'gain' line on every phase. After heavy pressure Ian Bennett broke free and went on a mesmerizing run to score [Jonah Lomu like was mumbled on the touch line].

Wexford won a 'turnover' ball and Ian Bennett continued to be a thorn in the Kilkenny's side ,James Stafford took a ball out wide and he had a lot to do to make thje corner . Unfortuneately time ran out and Kilkenny were champions .I want to commend the team for their resilience, it would have been easy to throw in the towel but their 'spirit' showed through ,hard luck lads.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my team --Philip Stafford,Martin Fenlon and Ger Lacey for all their help and support throughout the season and a special thanks to Sean Ahearne --youth officer, who's work behind the scenes is remarkable.

Leinster Cup Semi-Final

Wexford Wanderers...6 Athy...5

This is turning out to be a remarkable season at Park Lane. The U.15's have bridged a 24 year gap by reaching the McAuley Cup Final, which will be played in Donnybrook on May 3rd against Navan.

To reach this decider Wanderers have overcome Gorey, Rathdrum, Wicklow and Athy. In Tullow on Sat. last they faced their toughest game of the season against a very fancied and bigger Athy team. It was probably the attitude of the opposition that spured on the Wexford lads. From the start Wanderers punched way above their weight, they out rucked Athy turning them over on three occasions. When it came to scrum time, Wexford drove them backwards. Athy were baffled.

Eoin Roche commanded the game from out-half making many breaks that tested the awareness of the opposition. It was Eoin who stood up on two occassions during the first half and kicked two penalties, that gave Wexford the 6-0 lead at half time.

Athy came storming back in the second half, but Wexford refused to give an inch. The centre pairing of Donnacha Carroll and Josh Healy nailed every tackle. John Gannon and Ruairi Devereux were called upon to defend their corners and did so impecably.

The forwards to a man were incredible, led by captain Collie Joyce-Ahearne they tackled and put their bodies on the line. As the half went on they were battered and bruised but still held their line intact. It was not until 3 minutes to go that the line was breached and even then the try was conceded in the corner. The conversion into the wind was never a threat. Wanderers only had to close out the game and this they did effectively. A hard fought victory was achieved and a place in the Leinster final was the big prize. This side have improved as the season has progressed and now have also to play Kilkenny in the South East League final . This has been a wonderful season for the players and coaches. Well done to Peter, Pat, Ray and Billy for preparing this squad so well. Good luck in the finals lads.

Leinster U.17 Plate Semi-Final

The U.17's travelled to Carlow on Thurs. evening for their Plate Semi-Final v Naas. It was a cracking game. Naas led all the way but Wexford stayed in contention right to the end. Both sides scored three tries each, but a failed conversion was the only difference in the end. Wexfords tries were scored by Ciaran Kavanagh, Michael Maguire and Mark Takacs. Jack O'Connor kicked two conversions. The final score was 21-19. This has completed the season for this squad of players. They certainly have achieved alot, and capturing a Leinster title was a fitting way to round off the season. Many of this squad are underage again next season, so expectations will be high.

Enjoy the close season lads and well done. A presentation night will be arranged to honour your achievement in the near future.

U.12's IN RDS

The U.12 squad were guests of Leinster Rugby at the RDS on Fri night last. They played v Mullingar at half time in the Leinster v Ospreys game. Wexford came out on top of this exhibition winning 3-1 with Ian Bennett bagging a hat-trick. Wanderers have had a geat season and this was a nice treat to wind down their season. The coaches and parents managed to enjoy themselves afterwards too. Well done to all.

They had a memorable evening getting to meet the Leinster players , in particular our very own Gordon D'Arcy.

The U.13 squad prepared for their South East Final on Wed. next with a fixture against visiting Bridgend Athletic from Wales. It was a great contest of open running rugby which thoroughly enjoyed by all who played and watched. Our visitors eventually winning by two tries. After the game both teams enjoyed a BBQ and made new friendships. The kangaroo court was highly entertaining in the bar afterwards. Next season is our turn to tour, start organising now.

Leinster McAuley Cup Q-Final

What a great few days it has been for Wanderers. Wicklow were expected to put up a strong challenge to Wexford in this cup game, but straight from the kick off Wexford ploughed into them and drove them back deep into their 22. For the next few minutes they pounded their defence but were left reeling when Wicklow salvaged the ball and broke out of defence to score under the posts. 7-0 Wicklow. Wexford didn't bow and were back in the Wicklow half soon after and scored tries from Collie Joyce-Ahearne and Sean Stafford. Wicklow added a converted try before the break to lead 12 -10.

Some astute tactical kicking gave Wexford good field advantage and they capitalised with further tries from Eoin Roche,Shane McGuinnes and Collie added a second to his tally. All these were converted by Eoin Roche. Wicklow managed a late try but Wexford were in firm control and now meet Athy in the Cup semi-final next Saturday.

What a super night it was in Portlaoise for the Div.1 Leinster League Final. Of course the result made all the difference. This game will long be remembered by the players, coaches and large number of travelling fans who witnessed a pulsating cup final. It had everything, intense passion, nerves, huge hits, fast flowing back moves, ferocious rucking and mauling, crunching tackles, suberb catching, total commitment, bodies being put on the line for the cause, opertunistic tries, precise kicking, loads of added time and then the sweet sound of the final whistle, the silver was coming back to Wexford.

Straight from the kick-off Wexford took the game to Longford, some hard yards were gained by carrying the ball, asking questions of the Longford defense. They tackled and tackled again because they had to. Stephen Dwyer, Johnny Craiciun, Michael Maguire drove at them. The back row were constantly on their shoulders to drive over and recycle, Carthaigh Geoghegan, Dan French and Mark Takacs were winning the breakdown and when the moment was right Dylan Joyce-Ahearne unleashed the backline. Stephen Scallan back from a long lay off with injury was on fire, he ran complicated lines and opened up the defense. Craig Wright was outstanding at full-back returning kicks again by running at the heart of the Longford defence.

Following a run down the touchline by Darragh Kehoe, the Wexord forwards got a sniff of the try line and after a couple of attempts Mark Takacs reached over for a deserving try. Jack O'Connor was on target with the difficult conversion and Wanderers now had points on the board.

Confidence was up and from the restart Johnny gathered and headed back for the try line. With a stampede behind him he was grounded short of the line. With the ball recycled, scrum half Dylan Joyce-Ahearne wriggled his way over to extend the Wexford lead much to the delight of the Wexford followers. 12-0 and looking good.

Aproaching half-time Longford made one of their few visits to the Wexford half and after moving the ball through the hands were fortunate to get the touchdown in the corner. 12-5 at the interval.

The second half was a real see saw affair with both teams giving it their all. At one stage Wexford were pinned to their line and but for a timely interception by Jack O'Connor, the score line would have been altered. Another Lomgford move was abruptly stopped when Ciaran Kavanagh nearly broke a body in two, with one of his bone shuddering hits. Wanderers were inspired and were soon back at the other end of the pitch. A penalty awarded for off side was struck with precision by Jack O'Connor and once again Wexford had the upper hand.

Fresh legs were added with Dylan Lawlor, Mariuz Kraska, Patryk Zaborsynski and James Roche being added to the fray. Wexford were tactically on the ball and some clever kicking kept them at the right end of the field. The added time seemed to go on forever but the sweet sound of the final whistle was greeting by a massive overflow of emotion as players, coaches and supporters shared the victory in the middle of the field.

This win is just another reminder that Wexford rugby is on an upward curve and all who play and are involved in Wexford Wanderers RFC can be extremely proud of that.

On recieving the trophy, captain Stephen Dwyer thanked the coaches, Fintan, Bobby, Colm, Mark and John for the huge effort in preparing this teams since last September. Hard work has its rewards.

They did not concede a try all day, which is no mean achievement, against the best teams in the country at this age level. Jame O'Connor and Pat Ryan can be very proud of their performances. Wexford were joint winners of Popplewell Cup after a magnificent day of entertaining rugby. Ten teams representing five counties and two provinces competed for this trophy for eighteenth time. Wexford competing as defending champions after winning the trophy for the first time in the club's history last year.

Wexford faced a strong Waterpark team.Following some good tight opening exchanges Wexford's strength at breakdown forced opening score touched down by Ian Bennett. Intercept try at scrum by Peter Barry made it two with a third try following some good wing play by Rory O'Connor who touched down in corner. Wexford winning first game comprehensively.

Wexford 3 Carlow 0

Wexford's second time to play Carlow this season after taking spoils in the first encounter. Wexford were prepared for backlash. However, two tries by Ian Bennett and one by Bill Joyce secured victory for Wexford who proved too strong for a good Carlow team. Wexford's unbeaten run continues.

Wexford 6 Gorey 0

Gorey no match for a very fast and skilled Wexford team. Again Wexford's dominance reflected in scoreline. Credit to gorey for battling on in the face of Wexford onslought. This team is unstoppable.

Enniscorthy totally overwhelmed by another strong and aggressive performance by this Wexford team. Wexford's unbeaten run continues. Enniscorthy scoring a consolation try near the end. Solid defence and attacking play proving too much for Enniscorthy and ensure a place in final for Wexford.

Final: Wexford 0 New Ross 0

New Ross proved worthy opponents in this final of the Popplewell Cup. Wexford attacked from the start and had Ross pinned down near their try line for a lot of the game. Wexford exerted huge pressure on their opponents who struggled under the relentless Wexford attacks. Finally after a break from a ruck Alex Ryan touched down in corner only to be adjudged by touch judge to have put foot in touch before ball touching down. Not dropping their heads, Wexford took line out from Ross with David Doyle getting a hand to ball. Josh Christie grabbed ball from ground and powered his way through Ross Defence to touch down. However Ref adjudged ball to have been pushed forward in act of touching down. At this stage of game Ross were living on their nerves as Wexford continued the pressure relentlessly. Following from the counter rucking and passing of Rory O'Connor and Conor Firman Wexford crossed New Ross line for the third time. Again referee judged ball to have been moved forward before touching ground. Storm clouds gathering overhead now and last few minutes of game played out in the rain after a beautifully sunny day. Both sides had chances late on in the game. New Ross's Mikey Dwyer nearly touched down in dying seconds only to be denied by David Doyle's brilliant tackle. But it was a day for defences with some uncompromising tackles from both teams. New ross very relieved to hear the final whistle. At the end both teams finished level and agreed to share the trophy for the first time in the history of the cup.
Full credit to Gorey RFC for hosting the event and for the facilities they provided on the day.It was a super day of very entertaining rugby. Wexford u12's scored eighteen tries and conceded only one. They have proved beyond doubt that they are a very formidable team and outplayed all the teams in today's event. Despite tough opposition this young team showed the kind of character that is needed to win games. They did themselves, coaches,parents and club proud today. The relentless pressure that they put on the opposition combined with aggressive attacking and defensive play has made them a team to be reckoned with in the future. Well done lads.

CASEY RYAN DAY

The annual event between Wexford Wanderers and Greystones, to commerate the memory of Casey Ryan will take place at Park Lane on Sun. 2nd May. It is always an event that provides many great memories, as friends from both clubs mingle for the weekend, playing and watching rugby, sharing food and drink and consolidating friendships that have grown over the years.

Wanderers mixed it up a bit on Sat. last playing a combined team v Hereford. It gave everyone a chance to shine against a very well drilled Hereford side, who are in their own regional finals this week, back in England.

The visitors were quick out of the blocks and had 3 tries and a conversion scored in the first half. Wanderers made a few changes and some strong ball carriers like Nick Jones, Steve Roche and Collie Joyce-Ahearne were added. David Kavanagh was having an excellent game at No.7 tackling everything that came his way. Wexford began to assert themselves anf much of the game was played in the Hereford 22. Finally Collie charged over for a try and shortly afterwards he added a second, when he picked and went down the blindside froma 5 meter scrum.

All who watched enjoyed the entertainment value of this game. It is always nice to play visiting teams. A different yardstick by which to measure the strength of our teams.

Under 12's SHARE POPPLEWELL CUP

A huge congratulations to all involved with the U.12 squad who went to Gorey last Sat. Last years U.12 team were the first Wexford Wanderers team to capture that trophy. This years group were determined to make their own piece of history and retain the cup.

They certainly did our club proud as well as making their coaches and parents very proud also. A more detailed account of events is on the way, along with pictures. Stay tuned.

Wexford travelled to Wicklow last Saturday and proved themselves yet again. Wicklow were not strong enough to counteract Wexford's aggressive attacking play. This was reflected in the overall score Wex 13 Wick 3. Newcomer Jack Moore scoring on his debut for Wexford. Josh Christie scoring a great interceptor try just on full time. Try scorers David Doyle, Ian Bennett, Josh Christie, Jack Moore, Tony Boggan, Alex Ryan, Peter Barry and Ben Powell.
U.12s can feel proud of themselves after another impressive display of rugby. Wexford's back line again strong in defense, only conceding three tries. Overall a solid performance but the real test coming this Saturday in the Popplewell Cup in Gorey.

U.13's BOW OUT OF CUP

The U.13's bowed out of the Leinster Cup at the Q-Final stage on Sat.last. This was a game everybody was looking foeward to, nothing like a local derby to stir passion. Enniscorthy had Wexford pinned back inside their 22 and they couldn't clear their lines. Wexford tried to run the ball out, but Enniscorthy intercepted and touched down under the posts .The conversion followed. Further pressure and and too many penalties conceeded resulted in Enniscorthy scoring again. Wanderers were shell shocked but slowly got into the game and Wexford surged forward but were driven back. Just before half-time Wexford lost Joe O'Connor and Andrew Maguire through injury. Wexford rallied in the 2nd half twarting 3 certain tries but they never got into a real scoring position themselves. Enniscorthy won 14-0. The boys were very disappointed but wished Enniscorthy good luck in the rest of the competition.

For this return fixture, Wexford travelled to Waterpark having secured victory in the home encounter two weeks ago. Wexford had to travel with reduced numbers, due to entrance exams coinciding with this fixture. The match was played over five segments.
1st Section
Wexford attacked very aggressively from the start and overwhelmed opponents. Good defence and ball offloading brought about a 4-0 victory. David Doyle powering his way through their back line to score two tries. This followed by attacks down the wings by Conor Firman and Barry O'Connor scoring one try each to secure victory.
2nd Section
This was a much tighter game with Waterpark coming back at Wexford but wexford still in command and winning 3-1. David Doyle. Rory O'Connor and Peter Barry scoring impressively for Wexford.
3rd Section.
In this game Barry O'Connor sustained a shoulder injury and had to retire having made a valuable contribution to Wexford's attacking play.Waterpark were now regrouping and managed to secure a win in a very close and physical battle. Josh Christie scored a great try after racing past two defenders to touch down. Alex Ryan was also impressive with another great try from a scrum. 3-2 to Waterpark.
4th Section
Both teams now feeling the pace but Wexford winning by two tries scored by David Doyle and Conor Firman. Again Wexford's dominance very evident.4-3 to Wexford
5th Section
This last game ended in a draw 1-1. The ferocity and physicality of this encounter taking it's toll on the players. James Resterick retiring after being injured trying to break from the scrum. James had a great game.
Wexford showed once again the character of this team of youngsters. Great defensive play and aggressive attacking proved that they are a side to be respected.Conor Firman man of the match.Rory and Barry O'Connor played sterling stuff.Great tackling.Good offloading. Very impressive team performance.

Under 12's v Waterpark Sat.13th Mar

After a tough start Wexford ran out convincing winners in a hard fought battle against Waterpark. Waterpark were first to score within a minute with a superb try, scored by one of their running backs. Marker laid down to Wexford, who responded with a superb score by Ian Bennett. Wexford's physicality came to fore at this stage and they ran out easy winners 3-2 at the end of first ten minutes.
In the second quarter despite some fiercely contested play neither side managed to score. However in the final quarter Wexford's dominance finally broke through after a period of exciting and expansive play Barry O' Connor touched down in corner. Wexford were pinned on their own line soon after, but took resulting scrum against the head. Ball moved quickly out back line for another Wexford score by Barry O' Connor. Impressive for Wexford were Peter Barry, Josh Christie , David Doyle and Alex Ryan. Man of the match Ian Bennett.

Well done to our club First XV who won promotion to Div.2 today , following a big win away to Rathdrum. Congratulations to Captain Aidan Stewart and his team of players, and to Maurice Logue and Aidan Buckley, the coaches.
It has been a wonderful season at Park Lane so far for all those involved. Hopefully our underage section will finish the season with some silverware, they are certainly in a good position to do so.

Wexford U14s took the long trip for a cup tie to Navan last Saturday morning . Navan, who were a very strong team and were unbeaten all year, got off to a great start scoring a try in the first five minutes which was then converted . They were in attack for the next ten minutes,but for some heroic defending from Wexford, Navan would have been further ahead .Wexford then came storming into the game with some great work from the forwards, taking the ball in for phase after phase .The ball was then moved out along the backs with David Tormey breaking through three defenders to score in the corner which was converted by Matthew Joyce . Navan scored a well worked try before the end of the first half which was not converted leaving the half time score at 12-7 to Navan.
Navan started very strong in the second half scoring an early try which was not converted .Now trailing by 17 - 7 Wexford stepped up to the mark with some great team work and were rewarded by a spectacular individual try from Josh Healy, who broke away from inside his own half to score under the posts. Matthew Joyce, steady as ever, again converted .From this point on the play was all Wexford with notable performances from Joe Coleman , Brionn Coffey and Connor Fenlon.Unfortunately the winning score was not to come for Wexford who lost by 17-14, to this much more experienced Navan team.

The U.15's put in a tremendous display of controlled rugby against Wicklow on Sun. morning in their South East League game at Park Lane. The forwards were very effective in keeping possession through the use of ruck and maul, Steve,Nick and Collie the main ball carriers. Wexford were dominant in the scrums and line outs also. Eoin Roche at out-half controlled the territory superbly. Both Donnacha Carroll and Josh Healy continously battered away through the centre, however Wicklow were highly organised in defense, and it was not until the 22 min. that centre Josh made the break through, scoring under the posts. Eoin Roche added the extra two points, to give Wexford a 7-0 lead at the break.
Wanderers again took good field position and following a forward drive, Collie Joyce-Ahearne crashed over to increase the Wexford lead to 12 points. Wanderers made some changes and shortly after conceded a try. This was to be Wicklows last threat as Wanderers closed out the game, winning 12-5.

The U.17's advanced to the Leinster Plate Semi-Final following a convincing victory over Clondalkin at Park Lane. Wanderers got of to a great start when Dylan Joyce-Ahearne took off around the blind side of the scrum to score after only 5 mins of play. Wexford were back on the scoreboard again shortly after when scrum half Dylan crossed for his second try. Further tries were added by Jordan Ryan and Colm O'Corcora before half-time, with Jack O'Connor adding a conversion.
The second half was more of the same for Wexford as the dominated up front, while the backs were in form adding a further three tries, Jordan Ryan, Craig Wright and Dylan Joyce-Ahearne completed his hat trick. Jack O'Connor who dictated play from out-half added a conversion to leave Wanderers with a total of 39 points.

The u13's travelled to play Carlow at the weekend .Wexford were on top from the start and it wasn't long before wing James Stafford broke through on the right for the first try.Further Wexford pressure ensued and the other winger Kevin Mahoney scored under the posts, from a lovely cross-field kick from outhalf Matt Doyle. An interception by full back Joe O'Connor rounded off the half .Score at half time 19- 0 to Wanderers.
Wexford were in full flow and Kevin Mahoney scored 2 more tries. A number of changes were made without any upset to the rhythm. Openside flanker Luke Lacey made a great break and ran the field to score his first try of the season .
The backs were running rampant andStephen Lyne was playing out of his skin.The forwards were definitely having an off day being pushed back time and again.With the game in the final moments Carlow scored a consolation try .Final score, Carlow 7 Wexford 38.

U.15's THUMP RATHDRUM

The U.15's advanced in their Leinster McAuley Cup with a resounding victory over Rathdrum at Park Lane on Saturday morning. Straight from the kick off Wanderers were on the attack and John Gannon finished off a flowing move in the corner. This was quickly followed with further tries by Ruairi Devereux 2 and Collie Joyce-Ahearne, with Eoin Roche adding two conversions. Wexford led 24-0 at the break.
With Rathdrum spirits in shatters Wanderers turned the screw, and seven tries by Eoin Roche, Nick Jones, Steve Roche 2, David Purcell, Eoin Blake and Josh Healy, certainly finished off this non contest. Eoin Roche kicked five of those conversions to leave Wexford with their biggest tally of the season, 69-0.

U.17's ADVANCE IN LEINSTER PLATE

The U.17's who are waiting to play their Leinster Final took on Rathdrum in Rd.1 of the Leinster Plate . It was a changed Wexford line-up but none the less they came out of the blocks in startling fashion and before half time had a 14-0 lead with tries from Jordan Ryan and Dylan Joyce-Ahearne. Both were converted by Jack O'Connor. A further try early in the second-half by Ciaran Kavanagh again converted by Jack O'Connor stretched the lead to 21-0. However, Wexford then proceeded to take their foot off the accelerator, and a lax defence led to Rathdrum bridging the gap to 21- 12. In the closing minutes, Rathdrum again broke the Wexford line and ran in for a try in the corner, which went unconverted, leaving Wexford to scrape a 21-17 win.

UNDER 13's BOW OUT AT SEMI-FINAL STAGE

The U.13's roller coaster came to an abrupt halt in Cill Dara on Sat last, being beaten by an all powerful Navan side. They had scored 3 tries without reply in the first 10 mins.
Wexford were missing Greg McGrath in the scrum and Joe O'Connor at full back.Wexford began to come to grips with the situation and forced Navan back and Jack Stafford and Neil Beaver we unlucky not to score. A number of changes were made at half time and the boys were determined to show their metal . Sure enough they got into the game. Wexford began to get good ball and throw it around and Daire MacCormack went in for a try under the posts. More pressure followed but Wexford were held up while over the line on 3 occasions. Another score just wouldn't come. Great fighting spirit from all the lads , and the final score of 42-7 doesn't do their huge effort justice. Hopefully by next Sat. they will be back in top form as they face Carlow in Rd. 2 of the Leinster Cup
